Open Call for Case Studies on Generative AI in Documentary
Summary
The Archival Producers Alliance (APA) Generative AI Initiative seeks case studies of documentary projects for its Generative AI Initiative. These case studies seek to bring to life the Best Practices for Use of Generative AI in Documentaries and our 2023 Open Letter, in which we outline suggestions for ways forward for these new technologies in documentary practice.
The case studies will illustrate the considerations that go into use of generative AI in the documentary production process, through the lenses of creative, legal, consent and algorithmic bias. Directors and producers who have engaged with these technologies are encouraged to apply here to indicate interest in developing a case study. The time required is estimated to be 2-3 hours for interviews, helping with documentation, and review of the final case study. APA may ask to see samples and works-in-progress as part of the process.
Case studies should meet the following criteria:
-
The project is primarily non-fiction in nature.
-
Generative AI has played or continues to play a substantive role in any stage of production.
-
Lead participant is the director or producer and primary copyright owner of the film or has authorization from the copyright owner to speak freely about the project.
-
The non-fiction project should be in production, but does not need to be completed.
-
The project may be any medium, including long or short film, series, documentary podcasts, and/or interactive media.
This study is being led by A.X. Mina, APA’s Impact and Engagement Consultant, who brings a decade of experience in research, technology and media production to the team.
Participation Fee
Projects can expect an honorarium of $200 for their participation.
